Henry Samuels

Bass

Henry Samuels is a double bassist and music teacher in Pittsburgh, PA. He is an active solo, chamber, and orchestral musician who performs with orchestras including The Cleveland Orchestra, the Akron Symphony, and Mansfield Symphony.

Henry enjoys collaborating with other musicians in chamber music groups with Cleveland based groups Musical Upcoming Stars in the Classics, and Piano Cleveland. He has performed major chamber music works involving the double bass including the Schulhoff Trio, Mozart’s Per Quest Bella Mano, and the Schubert “Trout” quintet.

He also enjoys performing and arranging Jewish folk music, and has performed with acclaimed klezmer violinist Steven Greenman, and trombonist/violinist Steve Ostrow. He also lead The Cleveland Music School Settlement klezmer ensemble from 2019-2020.

Henry has been teaching the double bass for over ten years, and has accreditation to teach Suzuki bass through Suzuki book 5. He has held positions as the bass instructor at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, the Westlake Music Academy, and the Avon School of Music in addition to his new position as the Suzuki bass teacher at the Pittsburgh Music Academy. He also worked as the bass sectional coach for prestigious public school orchestra programs in Lakewood and Strongsville City Schools in Northeast Ohio.

Henry received his Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University in double bass performance, and his Professional Studies Certificate from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He is currently pursuing an Advanced Music Studies Certificate at CMU working with Pittsburgh Symphony bassists Micah Howard and Peter Guild.
