The Pittsburgh Music Academy
Why choose PMA?

The cornerstone of our school is the conviction that every child can, with careful teaching and parental support, become a successful musician able to make music a part of his or her life. We believe music study will enrich their lives through appreciation of beauty, development of disciplined work habits, and increased self-esteem.

Our parents say it best
Group Class and Advanced Group

Group Class is a cornerstone of our philosophy and part of the instructional package your tuition purchases. This season our group classes will be following the same format we established last year. We will also supplement the instrument groups with a Performance Class for mixed instruments, either directly before or after some of the groups, which will serve as an informal recital where we can work on poise, projection, performance etiquette, and confidence with all of our students. These groups will not meet all year; they will begin the first week of October and will finish after the first week in December. They will meet consistently in January, February, March, and April except during Achievement Days and Spring Break. In September, May, December and June we may have occasional “Play-ins” instead of group classes, where all students of an instrument will play their Suzuki literature together for another kind of group experience.

The schedule for weekly groups can be found under For Parents.

Advanced Group!

Gil Teixeira will be the lead teacher for our Spring offering. This class is for our Middle and High School Students and will occur at East on Fridays:

Each class will be dedicated to a single theme, so you should come to any and all that you can.

  • Mar 24 - Counterpoint, canon and other more modern ways to build interesting harmony out of simple melodies
  • Apr 7 - The minimalist toolbox: phasing, looping and a handful of notes
  • Apr 20 - Introduction to Soundpainting: composing ensemble music in real time with hand gestures
  • May 5 - Á lá Cage: giving chance a chance
  • May 19 - Beyond the scale: music as organized sound (for this session each student must bring along either a smartphone, a tablet or a laptop)
  • Jun 2 - Free improv games and strategies

NOTE: The order of the sessions may vary depending on the technical and human resources available on each specific date.

We ask that you discuss which group level is appropriate with your teacher and then decide which time fits best with your family’s schedule.

In addition to the Group and Performance Classes, which are included in your tuition, you may enroll in Music Theory.  These classes meet in Greentree on Saturdays. If there is enough interest, we will be happy to offer them at our other locations.

More advanced students in Book 3 and beyond who are interested in playing in a group can sign up for Chamber Music.  Contact the Academy Director if interested.
